FEARLESS TRIPLE P

What is Triple P?

Triple P is a 'Positive Parenting Programme', which gives parents the skills, strategies and tools to help make parenting easier. Triple P is a ten week programme which looks into what positive parenting is. Positive parenting is an approach to parenting that aims to promote children's development and manage children's behaviour is a constructive, non harmful way. It is based on good communication and based on positive attention to help children develop. Children who grow up with positive parents, and positive parenting are likely to develop their skills and feel good about themselves. They are also less likely to have behavioural problems.

The 5 key aspects to positive parenting are:

  • Insuring that a safe, and interesting environment is being put in place.

  • Creating a positive learning environment for the child.

  • That you are using assertive but fair discipline.

  • Having realistic expectations of your child and what stage they are at.

  • Taking care of yourself as a parent.

Children love to be praised and to know they are doing well. Children will also seek attention whether it is positive or negative, and so the more positive behaviour that is promoted, the less you will see the less desirable behaviour. Children also like to have boundaries. They like to know what these are and they feel safe with them there. When boundaries are in place, the child knows what is expected and feels better able to cope At Triple P, we teach parents ten positive parenting strategies, some of there are:

  • How to spend quality time with your child.

  • Talking with your child and showing affection.

  • Praising your child.

  • Giving your child attention.

  • Providing engaging activities.

  • Setting a good example by how you are.

  • Using incidental teaching as a tool to get the child to think independently.

  • Using behaviour charts.

We promote behaviour charts because this helps the child see that they are doing things, and receiving small rewards. Rewards are time that mum or dad spend with them - not monetary. We promote sitting on the floor and doing a jigsaw, or going to ride a bike in the park. Spending time together is the most valuable gift we can give - especially in a parent child relationship.

Session 4 looks at managing misbehaviour, and giving the parents ground rules to put in place and the tools to do so. For example, rather than shouting from room to room when giving an instruction we would be encouraging parents to come down to the child's level, touch them to let them know you are close, maintain good eye contact and to give them a simple instruction. Break the instructions down for them as children cannot cope with many at one time - especially smaller children.  We also look at keeping a chart of misbehaviour. This will enable parents to see how many times something is happening, and if it is occurring on a regular basis/day/time which will then help identify what is causing the behaviour. They can see a pattern and help change it. We also teach planning ignoring to deal with minor problems and how to give clear, calm instructions. We then look at backing up the instructions with clear and logical consequences. This could be quiet time where the child sits quietly reflecting on what has happened or it could be that we use a consequence. For example if two children have been fighting over a toy, we would teach parents to give two warnings. After that we would then take the toy away, and give the children a time of how long the toy is away for. For example for older children 5 minutes, or for younger children 1 minute. After this the toy would be removed, but put in clear sight for the child/children to see. After the time is up, we teach parents to always turn the experience into a positive and to praise the child/children for being patient and always giving the toy back. Every time their is a negative, we would try to turn it into a positive and through Triple P we give parents the tools to do so.
